受験向けの熟語集などによく載っている熟語にagree withとagree toがあります。熟語集でなくても、大学受験経験者でこの表現を見たことがない人はいないと思いますが、違いを説明できますか？一昔前は「目的語に人を取るならwithで、モノならto」やら「双方向的ならwithで、一方通行ならto」はては「同意ならwithで、承諾ならto」なんてトンデモ解説まかり通っていたものですが、今はどうなんでしょうね・・・。
実際の所は・・・agree withは「同じ意見を持っている」という「状態」を表し、agree toは「同じ意見になる」という「動作」(変化)を表すというのが真相です。これはたとえば、beとbecomeや、haveとgetの違いに似ています。beは「S＝Cという状態であること」を、becomeは「S＝Cという状態になること」を指します。have「持っている」とget「持っている状態になる」
- He was a teacher 10 years ago.
- He became a teacher the other day.

したがって、agree withは以下のように使われます。
- I totally agree with his opinion.
- I agree with you that it is a good idea so let’s go ahead and do it.
- I can’t eat seafood – it just doesn’t agree with me.

B: “Well, it was not bad. That was a typical Hollywood movie, right?”
A: “I agree with that.”
B: “Maybe next time, we should try a foreign movie.”

B: “That guy, what’s his name? Yeah, Edward. Somehow I can’t trust him.”

B: “But if they agree to our proposal, we will work together.”

対して、agree toは以下のように使われます。
- His boss would not agree to his plan, so he had to think of a new plan.
- After a lot of persuasion, he agreed to help me in the end.
- When the 3 criminals were interviewed by the police, none of their stories agreed.
- The two companies agreed a way to solve their financial problems.

- The sentence “I loves teaching English” is incorrect because the subject and the verb don’t agree. The correct version is “I love teaching English”.
ちなみに、agree onというイディオムもあるのですが、これは「ある話題に関して同意見である」という状態を表します。どちらかと言うと、agree withに近いですね。
